Many people feel very uneasy or are not able to settle if there are red dots appearing on the screen to be tapped. This is a psychological fact that Facebook takes advantage of. However, the company has realized that its growth hacking feature can have a bad impact on their business as it hinders with audience engagement.

It was Jane Manchun Wong, reverse engineering specialist who spotted the Facebook notification dots setting in its prototype form. Today, Matt Navarra, social media consultant witnessed the feature being publicly tested. Facebook has confirmed TechCrunch that this is a new global test conducted by the company on a subset of users on the iOS and Android platforms.

According to a spokesperson:

“We are testing new ways to give people more control over the notifications they receive in the Facebook app.”

The company has planned to offer more such features using which users can have more control over their Facebook notifications. This means you will not miss out on what’s important but at the same time, you will not get drowned in noise.

According to the Facebook spokesperson:

“People don’t necessarily want to see a notification on the badge (the in-app dots on tabs) if they’re already getting notifications in the jewel (the red counter on the Facebook app icon on your phone’s home screen).”
